A conventional hydraulic system with a fixed-displacement pump provides a constant flow through the system. When the system develops the set pressure, the pump flow is bypassed through the associated pressure relief valve. As a consequence, the system generates tremendous amount of heat. Even when a variable-displacement pump is employed, the system produces considerable heat. A sophisticated solution to improve the efficiency is to add a load sensing feature to the system.

The hydraulic system with a load sensing feature provides only the flow and the pressure as required by the connected load. Controlling both the pressure and the flow allows for a significant reduction in losses, improvement of circuit efficiencies, and enhancement of the service life of the system. The principle of load sensing is widely used in mobile hydraulic systems, including tractor systems, trucks, and cranes. It is also…

Introduction

Modern high-pressure hydraulic systems with components built to closer tolerances are susceptible to many types of contamination. Contaminants can cause the premature wear of internal surfaces. They also promote leakage and clog the flow paths. Therefore, an efficient and correctly-sized filtration system should be an integral part of every hydraulic system to separate the particulate matter of a specified size or greater from the system fluid. They should be fitted at appropriate locations in the hydraulic circuit for the effective control of contamination.

Know the Most Economical Pressure in Pneumatics

What is the Most Economical Pressure in Pneumatics? Pneumatic systems have been developed and progressed comparatively as a low-pressure system. Pneumatic air consuming devices such as cylinders and rotary actuators are designed for the maximum operating pressure of 8 to 10 bar [115 to 145 psi]. However, practical experience has shown that 6 bar [90... Continue Reading →

Relay-based Electro-hydraulic Systems

In the electrical actuation of a hydraulic valve, the necessary actuating force is obtained electrically with the help of a solenoid. The off-centre core of the solenoid coil is pulled towards the centre of the coil when the electric current is passed through it. This discrete movement of the core is used to actuate the...
